A Truck Photographer's Diary - Photo Books

JUST BECAUSE A CD HAS THE SAME TITLE AS A PHOTO BOOK, DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT IT CONTAINS THE SAME PICTURES

Truck Photo Books

Inspired by his mother who took photos of his Dad's trucks in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Dave began photographing trucks in the late 1950s using a Brownie Hawkeye Camera. He continues that passion today.

A Truck Photographer’s Diary
Reliable Carriers, Inc.
DABble Publishing & Imaging
Author & Editor:  David A. Bontrager
A Variety of Photographers is represented

  • This book has 222 pages, 304 photos.
  • Reliable Carriers, Inc. is probably the most photographed fleet in the United States, and for good reason, it’s a very impressive fleet of owner-operators.  This book is an excellent overview of Reliable.
  • Reliable runs the U.S., Canada, and Alaska.  This is one reason there are so many trucks with huge self-contained sleepers, they’re gone for long periods of time and also run some very desolate areas.
  • This is a very large book, therefore it’s offered in hardcover with dust jacket only.
  • If you're an old trucker I know you will enjoy this book and consider it a good investment.
  • If you're a young person or someone interested in the history of trucking, I hope this book gives you an insight to trucking.
  • This would be a great coffee table book.

A variety of photographers are represented

  • This book has 82 pages with 82 photos.

  • There is a short photo essay on V & J Derstine, Hatfield, PA.

Book 068
A Truck Photographer’s Diary
Southern Produce Haulers 1950s
DABble Publishing & Imaging
Author & Editor:  David A. Bontrager
Photography by Neil Sherff

  • This book has 80 pages.
  • Hauling produce out of the South in the 50s and 60s was the wild side of trucking.  Spend all day loading produce; then it was time to truck, and truck hard to the North.
  • The Interstate System did not exist back then, and those small engines would work their guts out on the mountain grades of north Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky.  Sometimes the 2-lane highways would have a passing lane on the steep grades; but if there wasn’t, we would pass anyway, hoping we could get around before facing oncoming traffic.  We would crawl uphill, but going downhill we would let ‘em roll.
  • During this era there were several icons of Southern produce haulers, No. 1 of course being the single-axle B-61 Mack with integral sleeper.  Following Mack would be the single-axle Autocars and Whites with integral sleepers.  Other makes could of course be found, but these three ruled.
  • “Putt-Putt” was common terminology for ice bunker trailers.  The putt-putt was a gasoline engine on the front of the trailer that ran a fan that blew cool air from the ice over the load.  The three most popular ice bunker trailers were Great Dane, Dorsey, and Trailmobile, with Great Dane being No. 1.
  • This book is photos of produce haulers that were either from the south or ran into the south.
  • If you're an old trucker I know you will enjoy this book and consider it a good investment.
  • If you're a young person or someone interested in the history of trucking, I hope this book gives you an insight to trucking from a bygone era.
  • This would be a great coffee table book.

  • The book begins with a short history of the cabover Kenworth, using Robert’s photos as examples.
  • The book features both company trucks and owner-operators.
  • Many of the photos were taken at Harlan’s Triangle Truckport located on the west side of Davenport, Iowa.  Harlan’s was located along U.S. Highway 6, which was a major east-west highway across Iowa.  Many of the western freight companies fueled and changed drivers at Harlan’s.  All of the western freight companies ran team in the 50s.
  • During those days Oscar Mayer had a huge packing plant in Davenport, and this generated a lot of truck traffic at Harlan’s.  Needless to say, Harlan’s was a very busy place 24/7.
  • The trucking industry is a constantly changing arena, and when trucking history is gone, it’s gone forever.  Many thanks to Robert for his efforts at photographing trucks over the years, without photos like these we would not have any history of trucking.
  • The photo album is a great collection of vintage trucks.
  • This is a great coffee table book.

About The Author

  • Dave’s mother took photos of his dad’s trucks in the 1940s and 1950s and is the one responsible for Dave’s interest in truck photography.  As a boy, Dave began photographing trucks in the mid-1950s, and also collected photos from trucking companies.  Over the years Dave learned to know many people who collected truck photos, and many of these acquaintances sent him photos.  Dave of course is quite a historian on the trucking industry and the trucks.  Dave’s passion for truck photography continues today.  He is now retired and lives with his wife Anna near Elnora, Indiana.

About The Photographer

  • Robert Ward began photographing trucks in 1952 and is well known for his truck photos.  During the 1950s and through the 1960s he shot mostly black and white photos, which was very common for that era, but he also shot some color photos.  He continues to photograph trucks today, but on a more limited basis.

Special Edition:  Owner-Operators
DABble Publishing & Imaging
Author & Editor:  David A. Bontrager
Contributing Photographer:  Robert Ward

  • This book is a tribute to the owner-operator.  Owner-operators were and still are a special breed of trucker.  They are independent, self-starters, and could even be called rebels.  Some were successful, and some were not, but they all had one thing in common, they tried to make their mark in a tough industry.
  • Four photo essays are included; Midwest Coast Transport, Frozen Food Express, Zero Refrigerated Lines, and the Refrigerated Div., Ringsby Truck Lines, along with numerous others.
  • Also included is coverage of B. C. Fry, Cecil V. Fry, and Robert (Bob) E. Fry.
  • B. C. Fry, Clara Hicks, and Norm Fritz were legendary owner-operators of the day, and all are included in this book.  Bill Whitaker is also included.  Bill’s Bullnose Kenworth was well known for having a 200 Cummins with an Ellis split manifold.
  • The 80-page book features mostly black and white photos, with some color.
  • Many of the photos were taken at Harlan’s Triangle Truckport located on the west side of Davenport, Iowa.  Harlan’s was located along U.S. Highway 6, which was a major east-west highway across Iowa.  Many of the owner-operators of the day ran team.

Book 020
A Truck Photographer’s Diary
Upper Midwest
DABble Publishing & Imaging
Author and Editor:  David A. Bontrager
SECOND PRINTING

  • This 152-page book is the second printing of Upper Midwest and features 213 photos, which is many more photos than the first printing.
  • The purpose of this book is historical documentation of trucking, as collected by the author.  The timeline is the late-1940s to late-1970s.
  • Included are company glossy prints or paper prints that were gifts to the author and photos taken by the author or from his collection.
  • Both black & white and color photos are included.  Also included are some restored vintage magazine advertisements, which I find very interesting.
  • The photos were restored by DABble Publishing & Imaging.  On occasion, historical value of the image has taken precedence over image quality.
  • There are several mini photo essays in the album; the early years of my dad’s trucks, late-1940s-early-1950s; Bontrager Truck Service, mid-1950s-mid-1960s; when I was leased to Michigan & Nebraska Transit, late-1960s-late-1970s; when I worked at Double Eagle Industries in the late-1970s.
  • Double Eagle manufactured custom sleepers and this was the early years of walk-in sleepers.  Double Eagle was instrumental in making the walk-in sleeper popular with truckers all over the United States.
  • The trucking industry is a constantly changing arena, and when trucking history is gone, it’s gone forever.  Without photos like these we would not have any history of trucking.
  • I put a lot of work in this second printing and it turned out great.  This collection of vintage truck photos would make a great coffee table book.
