Truck Modeling Books

During the 1990s and into 2000 Dave modeled trucks in 1:87 scale plastic. To get the trucks the way he wanted them, he scratchbuilt and hand-fabricated many of the components. After moving to Indiana he began collecting diecast trucks and became a dealer of diecast trucks, beginning with 1:53 scale Tonkin Replicas trucks. It didn’t take long until he was custom building these trucks into works of art. Since there are no commercial detail parts available in 1:53 scale, he had to hand-fabricate everything, from plastic to stainless steel components. It was during this time that he developed his now famous frame stretching method for diecast trucks, which he also uses for 1:64 and 1:34 scale trucks. Next he moved to 1:64 scale diecast trucks by DCP. DCP makes trucks more suitable to Dave’s liking, plus the quality is higher, and there are a lot of commercial detail parts available. Despite this, Dave still hand-fabricates a lot of the components for building his custom trucks. He also likes to work on First Gear 1:34 scale diecast trucks, especially the Bullnose Kenworth, which is one of Dave’s favorite trucks. The only large scale truck he works with in plastic is the mid-1950s Revell conventional Kenworth and Fruehauf trailer, always making modifications as he never builds one stock out of the box. Despite poor health Dave still custom builds model trucks today, although now on a limited basis.

Modeling 1:87 Scale Trucks

Photos of model trucks built by David A. Bontrager

Models Built by Dave Bontrager

Model Builder, Photographer, Author, and Editor: David A. Bontrager

Publisher: DABble Publishing & Imaging

As with all of my books, this book is printed and bound by a professional printer

Softcover

  • The photos in this book show my efforts in modeling trucks in 1:87 scale. This is not a “how to” book, but rather photos of the finished models. All models are plastic and almost all were built in the mid to late 1990s. This was long before pre-decorated models were available, so a lot of painting and decaling was a necessity. The models in this book represent some of the finest 1:87 scale truck modeling you will find anywhere.
  • The 80-page book has 77 photos.
  • All but one of the photos are color.
  • This is a great coffee table book and perhaps an inspiration for the reader to engage in truck modeling.

About The Author

  • During the years that Dave lived in Colorado he was a prolific 1:87 scale railroad and truck modeler using his photographs as a guideline for accurate modeling. He is now retired and lives in Elnora, Indiana.

Softcover

  • The photos in this book show my efforts in modeling diecast trucks in 1:53 scale. This is not a “how to” book, but rather photos of the finished models. In 1:53 scale there aren’t any commercial detail parts available, so everything had to be hand-fabricated, which of course required a lot of work and time. These are not all of the 1:53 scale trucks that I have built, but it is a good representation. The models in this book represent some of the finest 1:53 scale truck modeling you will find anywhere.
  • The 120-page book has 117 photos.
  • All of the photos are color.
  • This is a great coffee table book.

About The Author

  • After moving to Indiana Dave turned a life-long hobby into a business and began professionally custom building 1:53 scale diecast trucks. He is now retired and lives in Elnora, Indiana. He still custom builds, but due to poor health doesn’t do as much as he used to.

Softcover

  • The photos in this book show my efforts in modeling diecast trucks in 1:64 scale.  This is not a “how to” book, but rather photos of the finished models.  In 1:64 scale there are many commercial detail parts available, but I still hand-fabricated a lot of parts, and this is one of the things that make my 1:64 scale trucks stand out from the rest.  I rarely build two trucks identical, and there are a series of photos in the book that show differences between three trucks that are very similar.  The models is this book are trucks that I have sold to customers.  These certainly are not all of the 1:64 scale trucks that I have built to sell, but it is a good representation.  I have also built quite a number of 1:64 scale trucks for my own personal collection, which will be covered in another book.  The models in this book represent some of the finest 1:64 scale truck modeling you will find anywhere.
