Dave is now retired and living in Elnora, Indiana

During the years that Dave lived in Colorado he was a prolific train photographer. He loved the Burlington Northern and Rio Grande, but also photographed the Union Pacific and Santa Fe.

Train Modeling Books

Along with building scale models of trucks, Dave was also a prolific 1:87 scale railroad modeler. His specialty was building accurate models of locomotives. • Coverage is early to mid-1990s.

A Train Photographer’s Diary
BN America – A Photographic Study of the Prototype
DABble Publishing & Imaging
Author & Editor:  David A. Bontrager
Photography by David A. Bontrager

  • This book has 254 pages with 254 photos.  This is a huge book.
  • My fascination with BN America began in the late-1980s and continued until they shut down the operation.
  • This book features BN America containers, including lease units from GENSTAR and ITEL.
  • BN America also developed the “Versa-Deck”, a flatbed container, and then the “Power Pac” units to power refrigerated containers.  These are also covered in the book.
  • BN America was an innovative company and set many standards for domestic intermodal.  It was a sad day for me when they shut down the operation, but BN America had simply run its course.
  • The railroad industry is a constantly changing arena, and when railroading history is gone, it’s gone forever.  Without photos like these we would not have any history of railroading.

Book 092
A Train Photographer’s Diary
Union Pacific SD40-2
DABble Publishing & Imaging
Author & Editor:  David A. Bontrager
Photography by David A. Bontrager

  • This book has 256 pages with 255 photos.  This is a huge book.
  • This book features Union Pacific SD40-2 locomotives.  It’s quite a study of this locomotive, including early and late units, short nose, medium nose, and snoots.
  • My favorite nose length was the medium nose, but I was always attracted to the snoots and became quite a student of these.
  • The SD40-2 was one of my favorite locomotives.  It was a gorgeous locomotive; it had style.  The long decks at each end gave it a unique look.
  • This book is mostly roster views, but many action views are also included.  There are also many detail views included.
  • The railroad industry is a constantly changing arena, and when railroading history is gone, it’s gone forever.  Without photos like these we would not have any history of railroading.
  • Journey with me as we go to a bygone era in railroading.

Book 044

Burlington Northern C30-7 & U30C Locomotives
A Train Photographer’s Diary

Author, Editor, and Photographer: David A. Bontrager

Photo credit given for contributing photographers

Publisher: DABble Publishing & Imaging

As with all of our books, this book is printed and bound by a professional printer in the USA.

Hardcover and Softcover, 128 Pages

  • This book features photos taken during the green and black years of Burlington Northern.  This is quite a large collection of C30-7 photos.  I was a student of this locomotive and photographed them a lot.  The collection of U30C locomotives is much smaller, but a good overview is presented.
  • I loved the BN and photographed it a lot.  I liked the C30-7.  The bulldog nose and wide radiator grilles were neat and offered a balanced carbody design.  My favorite place to photograph BN was in Colorado along the Joint Line and at Palmer Lake, so there are a lot of photos from this area.  The Powder River Basin and Nebraska were also two great places to photograph BN.
  • The 128-page book has 230 photos.  Numerous pages have six photos per page.  Most of the photos are color with a good selection of some black and whites.  Both roster and action photos are included.
  • This is a great coffee table book.

About The Author

  • When I lived in Colorado I was a prolific railroad photographer, especially the Burlington Northern.  To me the green and black paint scheme was a classic railroad paint scheme.  Gosh, I loved it.  I’m now an old man living in SW Indiana with my wife Anna.  Life is good.

  • This book features photos taken from the green and black years of Burlington Northern thru BNSF.  The collection of photos includes B30-7A Cabless, B39-8 LMX, B30-7, and C44-9W locomotives, including AC units.  The BNSF designation for the C44-9W is DASH 9-44CW.  The dates of the photos range from the late-1980s thru 2012.
  • My favorite place to photograph BN was in Colorado along the Joint Line and at Palmer Lake, so there are a lot of photos from this area.  The Powder River Basin and Nebraska were also two great places to photograph BN.
  • The 160-page book has 215 photos.  Many pages have two photos per page.  Most of the photos are color with a good selection of some black and whites.  Both roster and action photos are included.

Both the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad and the caboose are now gone, so journey with me back in history in photo documentation of a bygone era in railroading. The book is mostly color with some black and white images.

Burlington Northern SD40-2 Locomotives

Author, Editor, and Photographer: David A. Bontrager

Photo credit given for contributing photographers

Publisher: DABble Publishing & Imaging

As with all of our books, this book is printed and bound by a professional printer

Hardcover with dust jacket, 164 Pages

  • This book features photos taken during the green and black years of Burlington Northern.  If you like the BN SD40-2 you will love this book.  This book is possibly the largest collection of BN SD40-2 photos that you will find in a single publication.
  • At the end of the book is a collection of BN fuel tenders.  It would be difficult to cover the BN SD40-2 without covering the fuel tenders as they were used the most with the SD40-2.
  • My favorite place to photograph BN was in Colorado along the Joint Line and at Palmer Lake, so there are a lot of photos from this area.  The Powder River Basin and Nebraska were also two great places to photograph BN.
  • The 164-page book has 467 photos.  Numerous pages have six photos per page.  Most of the photos are color with a good selection of some black and whites.  Both roster and action photos are included.

Burlington Northern

Palmer Lake & The Colorado Joint Line

Book 023
A Train Photographer’s Diary
Burlington Northern – Palmer Lake & The Colorado Joint Line
DABble Publishing & Imaging
Author & Editor:  David A. Bontrager
Photography by David A. Bontrager

  • This book has 164 pages with 162 photos.
  • The photos are circa late-1980s to mid-1990s which was still primarily the green and black years of BN.
  • The Joint Line was owned by the Rio Grande and Santa Fe railroads, but Burlington Northern operated more trains over the line than the other two railroads combined.
  • At over 7,200-ft. elevation Palmer Lake is 2,000 feet higher than Denver, so it’s a grueling 52-mile long climb for southbounds, especially coal trains.  A common consist for coal trains was 5 head-end units and 2 SD40-2 rear end helpers.
  • The book can only show the photos, but the real excitement was being on the summit at Palmer Lake as 5 head-end units approached in Run 8 at 10 mph!  The ground would vibrate, and the noise was awesome.
  • Between Denver and Palmer Lake there is a southbound track and a northbound track.  The converge at Palmer Lake to a single track.
  • Between the three railroads action was 24/7.
  • I am now an old man, retired, and live with my wife Anna near Elnora, Indiana, but I remember those days of photographing the BN on the Joint Line very well.  It’s been a long road.
  • This would be a great coffee table book.

Book 022

Rio Grande Colorado Action

A Train Photographer’s Diary
Rio Grande – Colorado Action
DABble Publishing & Imaging
Author & Editor:  David A. Bontrager
Photography by David A. Bontrager

  • This book has 142 pages with 139 photos.
  • Coverage is 1990s.
  • The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad was a unique railroad in several ways; small but efficient, and the only railroad to go directly through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.  As their slogan states: “Main Line Thru The Rockies”.
  • Another unique aspect of the D&RGW was the use of GP40 locomotives.  The EMD GP40 wasn’t considered a mountain locomotive, but the Rio Grande used many and proved they could work efficiently in heavy mountain operation.
  • The Rio Grande was an all EMD railroad, and during the time span of this book the primary road power was the GP40, SD45, SD40T-2 and SD50, although some GP30s were still in operation.
  • This book features action views at numerous locations in Colorado, primarily Tennessee Pass and the Colorado Joint Line.  Whether grinding their way up Tennessee Pass or battling the 52-mile long uphill challenge between Denver and Palmer Lake, photographing the Rio Grande was always fun.  Gaining 2,000-ft. in elevation in 52 miles between Denver and Palmer Lake was indeed a challenge.
  • I am now an old man, retired, and live with my wife Anna near Elnora, Indiana, but I remember those days of photographing the Rio Grande very well.  It’s been a long road.
  • This would be a great coffee table book.

Burlington Northern

Book 025
A Train Photographer’s Diary
Burlington Northern – Coal Country & Other Action
DABble Publishing & Imaging
Author & Editor:  David A. Bontrager
Photography by David A. Bontrager

  • This book has 116 pages with 113 photos.
  • Coverage is 1990s.
  • Most of this book features coal trains in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, or coal trains in Nebraska, Colorado, or New Mexico, either coming from or returning to the Powder River Basin.
  • Coal trains and the Powder River Basin are addictive.  Lots of motive power dragging coal trains at a crawl in Run 8 coming out of the Basin.  Three unit helpers with a fuel tender on Crawford Hill in Nebraska was awesome.
