Prototype Locomotive Modeling
1:87 Scale Models Built by Dave Bontrager
Photographer, Author, and Editor: David A. Bontrager
Publisher: DABble Publishing & Imaging

  • Prototype Locomotive Modeling – 1:87 Scale Models Built By Dave Bontrager, Vol. 83, is a CD photo album featuring photos of prototype locomotive models that the author built during the late-1980s to mid-1990s.
  • Building models of specific prototype locomotives is extremely demanding on the model builder.  Not only do the details have to be accurate, but so does the weathering, and the use of many prototype photos is a must.  The photos in this CD photo album show my efforts in modeling specific prototype locomotives.  This is not a “how to” presentation, but rather photos of the finished models.  All models are plastic—not brass, and all were built before we had the plethora of detail parts, or the well detailed pre-decorated models that we have today.  Most of the models were built as of the specific date on which I photographed the prototype, not a common practice by model builders.  While my locomotive detailing is considered extreme by some, several of the models presented herein are definitely extreme detailing, even by my standards—detailing beyond all reasonable common sense.  I certainly don’t claim to be the best locomotive modeler, but I do consider myself to be among the best of the best.  Railroads featured are Burlington Northern, Rio Grande, Union Pacific, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Conrail, and Sacramento Northern.  There are also 2 photos of a CF7 I custom built for the Grand Truck & Indiana model railroad, owned by Russ Rettig.  The photo album ends with 14 photos of some of the freight cars I have built.  Sit back and enjoy the multitude of photos I’m presenting on my finished work.
  • Most photos are color, and also some outstanding black and white photos are included.
  • The images are in pristine condition and will view excellently on screen.  A few may be slightly less than perfect, but I feel the historic value of the trains shown outweighs the technical aspects of the photo.
  • Pages may be printed for personal non-commercial use only – not for public distribution by any manual, mechanical or electronic means.
  • Custom enlargements and posters are available directly from the author.  All custom enlargements and posters are professionally printed on Premium Heavyweight Gloss Photo Paper.  Not all photos may be available as individual prints, but most are.  Email inquiries to: sales@fatjacksplace.com or dabontrager@yahoo.com
